October 4, 2012

Good Morning,
Today's session is designed to help our K-8 itinerant staff understand the contents of the new Math and ELA Common Core State Standards and begin to realize the implications across all disciplines. The morning session is designed to help you begin to build on our curriculum to give you both the support and the knowledge base needed to reinforce the CCSS through the Fine Arts and Physical Education.
In the p.m., music teachers will join the high school and middle school, while Art and P.E. will work as a K-5 team (6-8 will be joining the HS).
Please use the p.m. to design lessons reinforcing the CCSS and to work together on other pressing curricular needs (i.e. SMART goals/action plans, K-5 alignment)
*Our itinerant teachers must begin making connections to the CCSS mathematics and language arts through the content of their individual subjects. Within the content of art, music, and P.E., CCSS can be reinforced by including:
  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
  • Personal Meaning
  • Social, Cultural, Historical, and Contemporary Context
  • Communication and Collaboration
  • Creativity & Innovation
  • Information and Technology Literacy
  • Productivity, Accountability and Self-Direction
  • Leadership and Responsibility.
*Itinerant lessons/activities should include the following:
  • Making sense of problems
  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively
  • Constructing viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
  • Model with mathematics
  • Use appropriate tools strategically
  • Attend to precision
  • Look and make use of structure
  • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
